Metro Ethernet Over Fiber Is All About Speed
Metro Ethernet over fiber is all about speed. It is fully detailed by the IEEE 802.3 industry specification. This Ethernet standard has come a long way since its first version was released in 1981. Its initial ten megabit per second speed seemed blisteringly fast at the time. Of course, it now looks snail slow.
Ethernet technology initially used thicknet coaxial cable. That form of cable was difficult to use due to its inflexibility. The next generation technology came in the form of the easier-to-handle thinnet cable which was easier to use and allowed faster speeds. Thinnet cable was in turn replaced by twisted-pair wire cables that are even easier to use, and yes you guessed it, provides even faster speeds. Unfortunately, even the highest quality, most advanced form of twisted-pair cabling is subject to both to electromagnetic interference and cross-talk. Both of these negatives worsen as speeds increase degrading the reliability of data transfers if speeds are pushed too high.
Those issues are resolved by unshielded twisted-pair cables. This fiber optic technology allows reliable data transfers without any electromagnetic interference or cross-talk. Ethernet over fiber is expensive and can usually be justified only buy high volume, time critical commercial applications. Even high performance organizations that are currently connected with Cat 5 or Cat 6 twisted-pair cabling may find it difficult to justify upgrading to fiber.
